The 100' Long Expo Entry and X Screen; “The integration of WaterScrim™’s into a 100’ long walk through entryway set, and Integration into an X-Scrim™ set." In 2006 Gene Brian
and Michael O’keefe at TPI (Technical Productions Inc) called us
with a very interesting and challenging project. They wanted
to employ our WaterScrim™
and WaterGate technologies into a 100’ long set that would form the
entryway to an Insurance Expo. They wanted the guests and
patrons to be able to walk right through the wall of water, hence,
The set would consist of nine 10’ long WaterScrim™ V4-T systems integrated into a stainless steel clad façade. The 100’ long wall would contain three arches that would form passage ways through the wall. The challenges were A) the entire wall was not straight rather it had an arc shape and arc shaped things are always a pain in the ass. B) The 3 entryway arches would not be able to utilize our standard catch troughs, hence, the arch, reservoir and catchments would have to be engineered from scratch and would all have to be build right into the set and not be seen. We turned the pillars to the left of each passageway into reservoirs and the arches were designed to empty into the pillars. Since these reservoirs had to be invisible we also fitted them with remote fill and overflow utilities. We located the re-circ pumps and intake filters in the pillar reservoirs as well. Video projectors were then focused on each 30’ of wall/screens.
The X-screen was a concept we had originally developed for use with our laser displays as it produces a multi layered 3-D effect. TPI simply liked the aesthetics of the + shape and didn’t with to project on it, so, intelligent lighting was implemented to produce various washes and textures. Integrating the four 10’ V5-T systems into this stainless steel clad set was pretty straight forward, however, was a very close fit in many spots. The entire set formed something of a two story high 4-sided billboard with the WaterScrim™ at the bottom.
The sets were used for two consecutive shows in Chicago and in Las Vegas. The end product for both the 100’ entryway and the X-Scrim™ sets were top notch and really looked stunning. Both of these sets and WaterScrim™ systems are available as rentals through our “Rental” department. We would also like to thank TPI and ShowFX Inc for being all around great people to work with.
